16 Years Ago Today, Apple Unveiled the Original iPod

today marks 16th anniversary of debut of first ipod, introduced apple on october 23, 2001. apple ceo steve jobs stood on stage @ apple town hall in cupertino , showed off device fit in pocket hold entire music library.

first-generation ipod, apple advertised tagline "1,000 songs in pocket," rectangle-shaped device 5gb 1.8-inch hard drive capable of holding 1,000 songs.

featured black , white lcd , first click wheel, mechanical scrolling interface let users , conveniently scroll through long lists of music. click wheel included easy access buttons playing, pausing, rewinding, , fast forwarding through music content. first ipod's battery lasted 10 hours before needing recharged, , device priced @ $399.

when steve jobs introduced ipod, called quantum leap forward , outlined 3 major breakthroughs: ultra-portability, apple's legendary ease of use, , auto-sync itunes.

new versions of ipod released on yearly basis following launch of original device, , other notable launches included ipod photo in 2004, had first color display, smaller ipod mini in 2004, tiny ipod nano in 2005, smaller ipod shuffle, in 2005, , first ipod touch, came out in 2007 following launch of iphone.

apple retired ipod nano , ipod shuffle in july of 2017, , ipod touch sole remaining ipod company has sale. ipod touch last updated in july of 2015 , not clear if product see additional updates in future.
