Strange 5th generation issues

about 3 years ago purchased used blue 32gb 5th generation ipt $120. told getting condition ipod reset on ios 6. , it's on fresh install of ios 8.1.2 upset me fact didn't run @ all. noticed had severe problems. noticed wifi worked 20% of time , internal clock didn't work @ all; meaning auto time doesn't work , after locked , idle 2 mins, clock resets last setting set to. if battery died date , time reset dec. 31st 1969 @ 6:00pm cst. freeze, screen tear , crash , restart. since purchased family friend tight on money anyways, parents said pay me money since didn't want bug guy , knew bamboozled.
wanted device replace dead slate model purchased in nov. of 2012. loved device , wanted replacement give me same experience , allow me put things on didn't need on full 8gb iphone @ time and/or full 16gb ipad mini. instead got screwed ipod.
2 years pass , gained experience , learned how take devices these apart. since slate model wasn't working , blue 1 screwed up, decided take 2 apart , see issue in both of them, since had new devices , didn't see need in selling them, or paying fix them. slate model had suffered severe water damage in 2013 , sat 2 years, didn't have high hopes though wanted see work again , see data on it. took apart , covered in water marks. cleaned alcohol find terminals display, digitizer, , camera eaten away corrosion, there no hope in using again, did manage board function. plug computer , it's recognized , lists info on it, stuck in recovery mode. display shot after testing on blue model. display barely works , digitizer didn't work @ all.
blue 1 fine internally, after shattered display suction cup , pry tool. suction cup popped off , display shattered. strange, whatever guess. anyway, unplugged wifi chip , plugged in find magically started functioning designed, instead of working 20% of time. never figured out why clock doesn't work though. never put , sat in plastic bag year.
decided make functional ipod again, goal use slate chassis , put functional blue ipod's internals it. did , use it, looking find donor functional internal clock , display. might try , score deal on 6th generation , stitch black , slate 6th generation ipod, now, ipod works fine except continuing clock , crashing issue , sort of tolerable experience on ios 9. wifi works , haven't had troubles since.

question is, wifi, clock, , crashing issues in mind, common thing 5th gens do? have never seen idevice behave without ever being opened, , baffles me why it.
