iam new here not in mac world, sure got question...
want build cheap mac pro old 5.1 tower(2.8 xeon w3530) want upgrade xeon w3690 3.46 32nm work? 3530 45nm. read mac pro cpu compatibility list thread want sure iam not wrong. , there stronger cpu can install? saw i7 990x can work lower memory bandwidth (1066) witch can better? yes gaming (wow). think w3690 better because of memory no?

speed, no, no cpu faster w3690 on 5,1.

function, x5690 bit stronger because can handle more ram (w3690 limited 56gb @ moment, x5690 can boot 64gb).

there 0 benefit run 990x on 5,1. xeon cheap now, ecc ram cheaper normal desktop ddr3 ram. , w3690 has higher memory bandwidth.

gaming, w3690 should best choice on 5,1. don't think game use more 48gb ram. , games use 4 cores or less. hex cores make sure there 2 cores free handle background stuff. know has 12 logical cores, physical cores matters when talking raw performance.

anyway, still same suggestion. casual gaming, , if has 5,1. w3690 + decent gpu enough. if talking gaming under macos, 5,1 best choice in many point of view.

however, serious gaming. windows way go, , cheap gaming pc can beat 5,1 no matter how upgrade 5,1. w3690 multi thread operation. , oc chip in normal pc. on 5,1, can't oc it. , gaming single thread performance limiting.
