Why are all my deleted files recovered even after a Secure Erase?

i did 7 pass secure erase on free space on hard drive (conventional hd, not ssd). using command:

diskutil secureerase freespace 2 "/volumes/macintosh hd"

after completed, used disk drill check whether recover deleted files , did.
looks secure erase not working.

how can securely erase free space on hard drive?

did empty trash before doing secureerase? other possibility if have laptop time machine believe there file can created backup of of files (i can't remember exact details). also, programs make copies of files. example, experience know textedit makes copy of file you're editing haven't saved every in case of unexpected shutdown (in case, there power outage , when turned machine on, textedit re-opened file did not save).
