Turn off auto download of email attachments

hello,

possible stop mac mail downloading attachments automatically when opening email?
have un-ticked automatically download attachments in mail preferences still automatically downloads them when open email. assume option prevents background downloads.

set 'press download.' option available on ipad seems not on mac?
or @ least option pause or stop download large mail drop attachments.

remember one's signature in email considered attachment downloading...so not sure want that.
