Unlocking iPhone - question on SIMs and country


i'm on at&t , have question regarding family members' phones have received unlock approvals at&t.

family members bought phones at&t, locked carrier. since unlocks have been approved, know can pop in different sim finalize unlock.

if i'm not mistaken, can sim card, if it's not active or different country, right? have inactive ones u.s. , foreign carriers alike easy use. have active ones on sprint that's little harder, have contact sprint program sim's iccid phone's imei.

how can know when unlock has worked if using old , inactive sim? carrier name text in top left read "no service" instead of "invalid sim"?

lastly, have done in u.s. work? or if travel abroad, buy local sim, , then insert phone, work? i'm not sure if 1 has in at&t coverage territory finalize unlock on at&t phone, example.

MBP extremely slow, HDD cable replaced, what next?

How much is my cMP worth?
