iPad Unsure whether to update due to probably backup conundrum


hi
ipad air 2 still running ios 9.
mid-2012 macbook pro (unfortunately) stuck running mavericks.

periodically ipad macbook pro, keep secondary "hard copy" backup of photos , videos. copies of said photos , vids stored in icloud photos (or whatever it's called now), have setting turned on store originals ipad (and iphone, running ios 10 - confusion altogether).

quandary:
going have interoperability issues transferring media , doing backups macbook pro if update ipad ios 11? know file architecture has changed lot worried ios 11 not play nice such outdated os mavericks. so? or forced updating mac sierra (which don't want , can no longer seem find yosemite/el cap).
should or not do?

MBP extremely slow, HDD cable replaced, what next?

How much is my cMP worth?
