Selecting only part of the screen for a screen capture?


i using split screen watch video while taking notes in notes. during parts of video i'd take screen shot of video , bring note. however, when taking screenshot takes whole screen. there way can in mac os select part of screen capture?

thanks.
 

after taking screenshot, can tap small thumbnail in left corner of screen , crop picture there.
