hi all,
situation : i’m cgi artist & photo retoucher, on 2010 mp (see specs below). i’m utilizing modo modeling , renders. no motion, strictly high resolution stills print advertising… product shots, cars, etc. of renders 1-2 hours each, workable, of scenes high poly count , lots of lights taking 12 hours render. previews slow too, it’s difficult see incremental change i’m building image. i’d love quicker cgi renders. need understanding i’d bang buck, , go here given current tech landscape.
issue : because don’t know current bottle neck is, don’t know upgrade/alter. clock speed? number of cores? video card? else?
current:
mac pro 5.1 tower, 3.33 ghz 6-core (2010 westmere)
ram : 32 gb
os : sierra 10.12.6
video card : ati radeon hd 5870 1024 mb
boot drive : owc 480gb raid0 pcie ssd
work drives : 3x 6tb hds, in raid5
monitor : 2 30” apple cinema
: 2 owc qx2 external raid boxes 3 time machines (1 offsite), 4th internal hd boot clone
primary software : modo 902, photoshop
please chime in on of these options, or i’m overlooking:
a. keep 2010 mp, buy better video card
b. keep 2010 mp, 2 better video cards
c. keep 2010 mp, max out ram (up 32gb 48gb)
d. buy 2012 mp … upgrading to12 cores , 3.46 ghz, add max ram + card.
e. buy 2016 nmp… add max ram + card.
f. buy december 2017, 18 core imac pro
g. wait details on 2018 mac pro
stuff know don't know:
h. octane render
i. rent offsite render farms
note : feel free mention windows or custom build options if must, i’m pass on choices. i’ve been doing post-production work on macs since 1990, , while understand usual price/value arguments, i’d prefer stay in comfort zone.
thanks!
i'd never heard of modo before.
had , seems cpu renderer , not gpu renderer.
@ getting 5,1 dual cpu board , upgrading dual hex core 3.33 or 3.46ghz.
might better served building multi core windows machine.
i've read, gpu isn't utilized in modo don't bother upgrading it.
stated don't know modo other few minutes of google/reading it. please correct me.
