[Tutorial] Connecting a Mac to mgt port on Cisco Switches

recently had cause this, , it's not simple may imagine.

firstly, till need serial <> cisco port cable, , connect usb<>serial cable plug machine.

there 2 main chips in usb<> serial cable world, ftdi , prolific. osx has native ftdi driver built in 10.9 onwards, can use terminal if buy 1 of these. if purchase prolific cable, need serial emulation software - best i've come across called 'serial' in app store. it's dead good. quite expensive (£29, or £24 website).

said, if buy ftdi chip, won't need it. cables same price, £10.

connect up, turn switch on, open terminal , check cable has been identified typing:

$ls /dev/tty.*

then

$screen /dev/tty.device_name 9600

press enter, , should see prompt of description.

hope helps avoid load of nonsense troubleshooting before getting interesting stuff!
