Combination of devices for student?

hello. undergraduate student enter realm of postgraduate research, , looking upgrade/simplify setup. current setup consists of 2 macs, , feel things simpler single computer. feel that, me @ least, it's unnecessary own 2 computers. if change setup 1 computer, it'd have macbook of kind. i’ll travelling fair amount on next year, continental europe , south-east asia, , portable take me take notes, consume media, create documents etc. option enough power run illustrator/photoshop well, (very) light gaming, not deal-breaker. cost not massive issue if sell both old macs, keep in mind student.

current setup:

baseline 21.5” imac (late 2012) (2.7ghz quad-core i5, 8gb ram, 1tb hdd, geforce gt 640m 512mb dedicated memory)

use computer more power-hungry jobs, such creation of geological maps, scientific posters, , figures (in photoshop , illustrator). use media consumption, , light gaming, i.e. minecraft/world of warcraft (when time). naturally, replacement machine have able aforementioned tasks same degree or higher. machine has been great, however, 5400rpm hdd , non-retina display starting show age.

baseline 13” rmbp (mid-2014) (2.6ghz dual-core i5, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd, integrated intel graphics)

use computer extensive spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, documents, emails, web browsing, communication, , on. lighter workload imac. still going strong, , genuinely great laptop.

potential setups:
  1. sell imac + rmbp, buy macbook pro 15” 2017 (+ external display?)
  2. sell imac + rmbp, buy macbook pro 13” 2017 + external display
  3. sell imac, buy imac (4k or 5k), keep rmbp few more years.
  4. something else?

for travels, i'd recommend macbook pro. you'll have determine whether 13" or 15" suits needs better. if know you'll getting external display, i'd recommend 13" portability/convenience.

consider getting ipad air 2 or 9.7" ipad pro w/an apple pencil notes, games, or media consumption.

imac give more "bang buck" @ sacrifice of portability/convenience. if don't think issue, i'd recommend getting imac , 9.7" ipad pro.
