hi,
friend of mine has 2009 21.5" imac , installed new ssd inside , macos sierra.
ran quite time, won't boot (normal mode, safe mode, verbose mode (which goes gui again)) , loading bar stays @ 0% or something. not boot external ssd fresh copy of sierra on it, though shows option boot when starting boot selection screen using option.
tried target disk mode 2009 mbp (which sadly cannot run sierra) , checked ssd, working fine according yosemite disk utility.
tried other options smc reset , such.
boot recovery mode again , try reinstalling os onto empty ssd (using disk utility installer). see how works.
, while in recovery mode mouse pointer has "small text" floating beside it. see attached photograph.

got install macos sierra via recovery partition, seemed have worked, until boots second time , stays there.
well, try hands on snow leopard 10.6.3 , yosemite , see if work better.
nice, if apple offered versions officially somewhere easy download.
snow leopard available apple online. yosemite if downloaded theapp store previously. google helps. $19.99, bit cheaper windows.
