"Vintage" external connections

hello!
i'm searching best solution have "fast" , capable external archive since i'm getting out of space on vintage 17" macbook pro.
atm setup is: main ssd 256gb, optibay hdd 500gb (bootcamp , archive) , plenty of external hard drives goes usb2 usb3 through fw800 , gigabit ethernet.
so, need more or less 1 2 terabytes of want solution right mix of futureproofing (going buy new laptop in next months), expense , speed.
first thing did check w/r speeds of of drives , honest i'm little surprised.
7200rpm desktop class hard drive (1tb-mac formatted) on gigabit eth gave me 40mb/s write , 75mb/s read
5400rpm desktop class has drive (1tb-mac formatted) on usb2.0 adaptor gave me 20mb/s write , 30mb/s read
5400rpm optibay (windows formatted) on sata (negotiated speed 1.5) gave me 50mb/s write , 50mb/s read
7200rpm 2,5 hard drive (750gb-mac formatted) on fw800 gave me 50mb/s write , 70mb/s read
, @ end, surprise standard 2,5 usb3.0 external hard drive connect usb2.0 port gave me 55mb/s write , 65mb/s read.
"shocked".
ok, mac doing nothing else benchmarks cpu (i5-520m) free kick up, seems in end best solution buy external usb3.0 drive without spending money on vintage or discontinued solutions fw800 cases.
think? wisest choice atm?
thanks

edit, trying measure speed again without tool, suspect there sort of error in usb3 on usb2 case

my take on externals used backup - usb 3 , best price - yes, i'm cheap.
