How do I open .img files in Mac OS 8.6?

i wasn't sure if right place ask didn't see other place old mac software.

have been trying install virtual cd/dvd utility mac os 8.6 downloads come across in .img format , when click them, app shows open apple software restore, , if try , drag file stuffit expander gives me "an error has occured attempting mount disk image "-43"".

supposed do?

disk copy should installed in applications / utilities (or on 8.5/8.6 install cd under utilities or cd extras). disk copy mount .img file, if file downloaded via web browser , not encoded .hqx (binhex) or .bin (macbinary) format, resource fork missing, cause compressed .img file result in checksum failure , not mount.

i've relied on commercial program toast 4.1.2 os 8.x , 9. toast mount type of disk image available @ time (.toast, .img, .smi, .bin/cue, .iso , others i'm sure)
