hi,
first time poster, please pardon duplicate question. (though search came empty.)
have 2008 mac pro 3,1 inherited recently. needed desktop oomph run programs needed grad school. trouble is, they're windows only. worked here , replaced os runs windows 7 (i.e., no osx)... think of reverse hackintosh
said, specs decent:
16 gb ram
3x hdd (1, 1, 2 tb, respectively)
2x intel xeon 2.8ghz cpu
ati radeon hd 2600 xt gpu
i'm still contemplating upgrades, loosely in order gpu--ram--hdd (well, ssd)--screen. question three-fold.
1) upgrading components possible without scrambling os setup?
2) decided donate unused computing power boinc project. (i'm scientist, important me.) however, though not serious gamer, dabble , boinc task suspended, games laggy. excepting on boinc side, i'd think reflects age/weakness of gpu (it's 2008 era, after all). i'm not particularly computer literate, i'd appreciate insight new gpu unit best in instance, while maintaining full ui functionality (i.e., i'd keep boot screen, etc.). i'd prefer opencl/opengl compatible (whatever means) because it'll allow me create data viz of climate models boinc running in background. said, if here well-versed in boinc, i'd appreciate other tips might have, though i'll take concern on forums.
3) using old dell monitor. highest res screen tower can power?
follow ups questions on end concern "how-to's" if that's wants preemptively address in reply
here isn't intended things this, tia!
1) should fine since you're running windows.
2) i'd assume amd gpu you're after (rx480/rx580) since you're looking opencl.
3) whatever new gpu purchase can support. new gpus can 4k/5k , can 8k displays. old card? believe 2560x1600 max.
