Reinstall of Mac OS


hi,

yesterday attempted download & install high sierra on imac 27. downloaded fine install failed. when restarted received no access symbol ie circle line through along file question mark. after reading threads have managed start original os (yosemite) cd in drive. have run diagnostics on hd , saying nothing wrong it.

have read thread saying if install yosemite not lose files. however, thread states if chose "archive & install". far have not had option. far have chosen language , next step run diagnostics. questions choose come later on, if not if continue lose files?

thank in advance help.
 

if have "full os installer" in applications folder (check sure, there "full installer", , there "stub installer" 15mb in size), in opinion, best course of action this:

1. usb flashdrive of 16gb capacity or greater.
2. download either "install disk creator" or "diskmaker x" (i used idc).
3. use either app above create bootable copy of installer on usb flashdrive
4. boot flashdrive , try install again.

important:
before create flashdrive, make copy of installer somewhere else safekeeping. "archival drive", anywhere have sufficient space.

MBP extremely slow, HDD cable replaced, what next?

How much is my cMP worth?
