Power button doesn't work; Can only run by jumping power pads on AC power

this 1 gonna long , complicated. half typing out myself - figure things out in middle of long posts these... anyway

important information
- macbook pro "core 2 duo" 2.8 17" mid-2009 5,2 a1297
- upgraded ssd , 8gb ram
- running fresh install of el capitan on formatted samsung 250gb ssd
- dug original hd working version of yosemite

symptoms
- power button not function whether device on or off.
- keyboard has partial functionality. shift keys , function keys not seem work. caps lock still works. option, cmd, , control seem work. can use keyboard in boot sequence various things choosing boot device.
- trackpad tracks movement not click (old issue @ 1 point seemed resolve itself, back. unrelated).
- turning device on jumping power pads next ram.
- if ac connected, device boots or without battery installed.
- if using battery, device gets 2 seconds past chime before powering off
- if ac unplugged after successful boot battery installed, device continues run , restart , go in , out of sleep mode.

timeline
- machine has been running hot 2 years. suspected combination of dust in fans , aging thermal paste under heatsink
- summer installed sierra, not supported model. forgot patching method used.
- put ubuntu on no reason. used refind dual-booting.
- few weeks after installing sierra, keyboard , trackpad stopped working once operating system booted. use keyboard boot recovery partition, , once there keyboard , mouse seemed work ok. assumed software issue corrupted os.
- moved, , because such project did not turn laptop on around 3 months. issues listed above under "symptoms" not going on before moved, , present when unpacked laptop. knowledge stored (aside letting battery die) , kept dry.
- since i've started debugging issues outlined above, have disassembled logic board, cleaned fans, , reseated heatsink new thermal paste. had not touched of ribbon cables prior these issues arising, , doing has not seemed have effect 1 way or other. knowledge has been reassembled correctly.
- found original hard drive still had yosemite on it. used create el capitan usb , formatted ssd had sierra on (and data wasn't backed - gotta cut losses sometimes).
- original thought happened during sierra install efi , smc. downloaded latest firware update apple (https://support.apple.com/kb/dl975?locale=en_us) says installed.

final thoughts
- can't manually reset smc life of me. i'm assuming got reset incidentally when doing repairs, cannot control + shift + option + power thing work. there jumpers on logic board next power pads "smc reset," , i've tried jumping them, can't tell if did anything. love execute clear-cut smc reset rule out. ***i got clear smc reset using jumpers. saw power cable change green amber second.***
- honest, can't shake feeling software issue. i've had thing 10 years , haven't done different in way i've physically handled other leaving off couple of months. ordered battery off ebay didn't need. keyboard assemblies going pretty cheap, don't want wait week @ square one. these problems started after upgraded sierra.

what battery condition? being warned replace it?? sounds dying battery me.
