iMac + rMBP vs external monitor with rMBP

i have had similar setup past 10 years, using 15" macbook pro. current system maxed out mid-2014 15" rmbp. i've come realisation on past few months system doesn't fit needs anymore. find myself spending more time seated @ desk have in past. use system professionally - lawyer not "heavy" user - , find myself having quite few word documents open @ once, quite few finder documents open, various other applications. biggest issue @ present inability have several word documents open side-by-side work , difficulty in having repeatedly switch between these. it's quite cumbersome.

feel either 27" imac or external monitor setup solve issue.

potentially puts me off imac wondering how macs interact 1 - i.e. how icloud document/desktop sharing work? seamless?

if go external monitor setup have factor in magic keyboard/mouse. if go route of external monitor need high quality high ppi. sit , @ screen 50+ hours per week , i'm used retina display on rmbp.

budget around £2,000.

advice appreciated, particularly have 2 macs , work between them.

your 2014 15" mbp more powerful enough doing, , should capable of running "4k" uhd display. budget: £500-£1000. maybe bit bigger usual 27".

toy 4k got dell s2817q "4k uhd" 28" display £420 - "budget" 4k display: rather plasticky, no height/swivel adjustment, fiddly controls, fiddly cable connections , colour isn't scratch serious photo/video work, text editing nice , sharp & can fit text on screen eyesight stand. (i'm planning on using "second screen" if later better display or imac).

tip: grab "wired keyboard number pad" while there still in shops! apple have discontinued them.

on other hand, display on 27" imac thing of beauty, better 4k, makes imac pretty value, , take less desk space laptop , monitor.

syncing files - 1 reason stuck laptop+screen had bunch of fiddly web development stuff , virtual machines couldn't "sync", you're dealing documents , there many tools syncing between 2 machines (of icloud one).

i've started using called "syncthing" harder average set but, once installed on both machines, sits in background and, whenever they're both on home network, quietly 3-way sync of selected folders between both macs , file server.

question whether have software licensed 1 machine - app store software ok on macs, others might not (e.g. office) - might need fork out second/multi-machine license.

so, pays money , takes choice - bear in mind if display now, , go imac later, can use display second screen imac.
