hi all
took advantage of massive discount on 2016 tb mbp 13” base spec model (-30%) , after bit of reading, realizing keyboard problems might dealbreaker
(i’ve tried , don’t dislike it, concerns reliability)
going 2018 or 2019 model (i can wait little more) felt opportunity good
, new strategy buy cheap 1 , if necessary sell later limited short term loss
hence concern on keyboard reliability
bad ? statistics of failing keys per sold macbook pro ?
there significant risk “at point” keyboard fail (hence reducing machine’s lifespan , reselling potential)
feedback appreciated
fwiw, there no hard statistics, new keyboard has developed reputation being less reliable , more temperamental design replaced (no 1 other apple can make statistical comparisons tho), , i've observed 2016 models seem more prone issues 2017 keyboard. mechanism arguably more prone foreign particles getting underneath key , causing functional problems, , sound of keys on mbps has changed when system heated (making high-pitched popping noise.) said, owned 2016 , never had issues, , there quite few users have owned/do own 2016 models , have not had issues. ensuring keyboard remains clean appears reduce (but not outright eliminate) of these issues - many of rmbs , mbps checked in keyboard issues quite dirty , appeared have been used while eating, meticulously up-kept , still had issues.
imo, best thing can increase selling potential (and add peace of mind) purchase applecare , sell unit before applecare expires. not because of keyboard, because macbook pro has become less-serviceable on past half decade , when 1 small component breaks, entails larger repair (the computer industry, whole, has been moving in direction.) applecare ensures have functioning machine next 3 years (and ac+ includes accidental , liquid damage well), , brings next buyer peace of mind knowing have warranty fall on if used mbp purchased had issue (ac transferrable) - machines applecare can , routinely sell quite bit more machines without after initial 1 year warranty period has passed, because becomes lesser financial risk second-hand buyer. ymmv.
