carbon copy cloner. have used backups restore entire disk images perfect results - both when upgrading hard drives , when downgrading os update. new 5th generation easiest clone app in world use , ready both hfs+ , apfs. automating backup tasks simple process. time machine because protects against types of corruption , file modification clone not - but, if have usable clone, prefer using on time machine when doing restore.

guessing doing already, but, if not, consider using 2 separate drives bootable clone , time machine (and if want protection against power-induced data loss, clone should physically disconnected computer , power outlet when not in use.) if use same drive (which not advise), sure have partitioned correctly image , time machine files on different volumes.
