iMac 2017: Warning to those adding their own RAM?

so here's answer apple care should unsettle considering 1 of new imacs.

my question them: if buy 8gb base model of new 27 inch imac now, install own ram later take 64gb?

their reply: if order base 8gb model, while later install 64 gb in 4 available slots, useable limited 16gb (for total of 24gb).

didn't understand explanation (i'm not techie), seemed because original ram 2x4gb each, , therefore deal multiples of 4gb in expansions.

my (possibly mistaken) takeaway: if order new 27 inch imac 8gb of ram, can ever useably upgrade 24 gb(!)

not so, surely? can knows advise?

according https://www.apple.com/imac/specs/ 27" imac has 4 user-accessible ram slots. can put 64gb in of them.
