Memory shortage

i running mac os x version 10.6.8
2 ghs intel core 2 duo processor
memory 2gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram

today went open file created in word. message got "there not enough memory or disc space convert document.

file 20 kb.

haven't had problem before. know machine getting old, need. lot of things taking memory, don't know if essential or not. happy find away of dumping stuff.

other buying new computer - should go here?

tell model mac running, can run 3-4 gb ram. if so, go long way helping out machine.

also, i'm assuming can upgrade machines @ least lion, if so, should once more ram.
