Do I need a NAS?

or rather, need new nas?

i've got 1 , use store itunes library.
macbook accesses in order sync media iphone / ipad.
mini runs 24/7 , accesses in order stream entire itunes library appletv via homesharing.
i've got no dlna servers, no itunes servers, no plex servers -- 1 shared drive that's shared both mini , macbook.
mini , macbook each have own itunes library files locally -- share actual media folders.
works i'm worried failure due age of nas , drives. nas on 80% full.

shopping replacement when started wonder whether simple raid drive connected mini via usb wouldn't accomplish i'm doing nas.

mini see raid external drive mounted after every reboot don't think i'd have problem there.
if share same drive on mini , mount on macbook perform existing nas?

if matters macbook 2014, mini 2012 16gb ram, , existing nas zyxel nsa320 marvell 88f6281 kirkwood soc @ 1.2 ghz , 512mb ram.
