i updated our home video surveillance system q-see 4k nvr 4mp ip cameras. system compresses in h.265 (hevc). recorded segments can output nvr either dav or avi files, both h.265. q-see provides "smart player" application mac os playback either file format. in addition, avi files can played vlc. far saving recorded segments wish save later viewing, fine. if need supply video law enforcement (such when stole package our front porch), can still that. cannot edit of video segments.
live in rural area. raccoons, opossums, coyotes, skunks , other critters regularly on our property. on years, i've had fun sharing of these animals' antics our friends. our previous system (analog cameras , h.264 compression), edit views various cameras create little video story. upgrading h.265 system has eliminated capability on mac.
dav files can opened in "smart player" app provided q-see. avi files can opened in "smart player" or opened vlc. quicktime , final cut pro both refuse open h.265 avi files. vlc has mp4 export feature , tried out (converting h.265 avi mp4). resulting file mess. wouldn't open in quicktime or final cut pro. open in vlc, playback scrambled part of video. suspect file still h.265.
i've found conversion utility apps mac on web claim convert h.265 (hvec) h.264 mp4. of sites these files kind of spammy , i'm concerned i'll end installing malware utility program.
running yosemite on high-end imac. use aperture daily , yosemite last mac os 100% compatible aperture. besides, don't think sierra supports h.265 yet either (but looks h.265 coming high sierra).
know adobe premiere allow me import , edit h.265 files. $240/year able edit critter videos crazy.
best bet converter utility. convert h.265 avi files h.264 mp4 files , can edit them in final cut pro. have recommendations safe , malware/adware=free h.265 h.264 conversion utility mac os?
thanks!

i did little research , discovered aperture metadata bug happening under sierra got fixed @ version 10.12.2. there still few minor bugs being reported, fixing metadata bug big one. so, backed boot drive (superduper) , installed sierra. i've found 2 minor bugs in aperture 3.6 under sierra can live i've found far.
updated final cut pro 10.3.4 but, alas, still cannot handle h.265 files.
