How can I use other ports on Macbook Pro to connect external HD?

i’m hoping me? i’m untechnical person in technical world! need find way files off mac book pro before dies – here background useful answer this.

macos sierra 10.12.1

macbook pro (15inch, mid 2010)
processor - 2.66 ghz intel core i7
memory - 8gb 1067 mhz ddr3
graphics - intel hd graphics 288m


have had repairs done including new battery , more memory, still having problems , don’t believe it’s worth continuing put money it.

2 usb ports no longer work. model incorporates usb motherboard, , cannot replaced separately.

there 400gb of data used: cloud.

apparently can attach external hard drive modem , put files on there, after trying , failing told belong modem not compatible mac (sagemcom f@st 4315)

understand buy different modem support enable transfer – don’t know if can 1 suitable nbn (which have here) , fine adsl (i’m moving interstate in 6 months, might not have nbn) , both compatible mac , windows (i’m thinking might not mac next computer.) in addition, same reason, don’t want buy apple specific wireless hard drive.

i’ve looked @ various ports, thinking there may connector buy plug firewire port or card slot have end on plugged external hard drive manual transfer of files. (i used use time machine until usb ports failed.) looked online , couldn’t seem find – i’m not particularly technically savvy.

guess question know if such connector exists, it’s called , might able 1 online?
 

if not going repair mbpro ---
remove hard drive, , put in external case. there's backup, have available use on different mac :d

or, possibilty - remove optical drive, install hard drive in "data doubler", install new drive in place of optical drive. macsales has that, , has online instructions doing job.

MBP extremely slow, HDD cable replaced, what next?

How much is my cMP worth?
