Macbook pro battery suddenly died

i bought macbook pro in 2009. haven't replaced far except hard drive (ssd). that's pretty long life laptop , working charm until few days ago.
using it, unplugged charger , laptop instantly stopped. couldn't turn on @ first, , thought died, when plugged charger in, able turn on. when use can't unplug charger.

"about mac" section says: battery charge cycles: 1316 / battery status: replace now.
understand battery dead normal given age of it. don't though working charm few days ago. mean battery last 6-8 hours easily, thought if battery died @ least see coming progressively.

normal?

what normal 8yr old battery??? guess failure wasn't 1 of capacity decline if went terminal quickly. equally may have shorted between cells , electronics have shut down. id inclined scrap or repair pretty quickly, if chemical has happened don't want swell or worse if intend repair it.
