New cMP user introduction


hello everyone. :)

last week sold quad core mac mini $750 , bought cmp 5,1 $500 replace it. it's 2010 8-core model (mc561ll/a). nice condition. came design studio in portland. machine had interns/freelance said wasn't used much. has 12gb of ram , hd 5870 graphics card. wasn’t planning on going dual processor model, price went it. according archived apple store product page original price configuration $4149, think pretty deal.

used ccc copy old drive 1 in cmp running sierra , of course apple hardware test files 5,1 aren’t there, managed install , run test. no problems found. :)

1tb hard drive slow, plan upgrade apple/samsung ssubx ssd in pci-e adapter boot drive , adata su900 2.5" ssd secondary. planning on going samsung 850 evo or pro, came across released su900 features 3d mlc nand memory 850 pro, on sale @ newegg less 850 evo. turns out drive.

decided on dual x5675s because couldn't justify spending 3x x5690s marginal speed boost. think it's better 95w rather 130w , offered part of official configuration apple. pretty crazy pair of cpus selling $100 on ebay used $2400 option.

ordered parts upgrade airport card handoff & continuity. less $40 genuine bcm94360cd card pulled imac, mini pci-e adapter, , ipx extension cable bt antenna on ebay. went 14” ipx extension. there 11.8”, wasn’t sure if reach.

i’m undecided on graphics card right now. think hd 5870 okay now. planning on ordering gtx 1080, looks prices have been dropping lot lately , going start making them faster memory decided hold off now. have efi rom mac , i'm concerned how flash macvidcards affect manufacturer warranty. looks macvidcards offer 60-day warranty on cards sell.

i’d upgrade ram 16gb sticks, don’t want spend money on 6 right now. okay run 1 16gb stick each processor (in slots 1 , 5 only)? or better pick cheap 4gb rdimms stick in there them?
 

good idea on cpu, ssd , wireless card!

gpu, totally depend on workload , type of apps use. hassle free gpu flashed reference 7970 (or other tahiti gpu based card).

ram, stick 6 sticks. want occupy every memory channel cpus have -- 3 per cpu in case. less, , lose performance due lower memory bandwidth (empty memory channel).

MBP extremely slow, HDD cable replaced, what next?

How much is my cMP worth?
