microsoft released windows phone in 2010 and, within 3 years, became world's third popular mobile operating system. platform couldn't compete likes of apple , google and, of earlier year, ios , android accounted combined 99.6% market share.

microsoft continues sell limited number of budget smartphones running newer windows 10 mobile operating system, platform has received minor updates in recent months redmond-based company has shifted focus towards "intelligent cloud , intelligent edge."

microsoft has stopped manufacturing own lumia-branded smartphones and, according the verge, rumors suggest company maintain windows 10 mobile until support platform ends in 2018.

ultimately, windows phone casualty of iphone, , later android smartphones, upended mobile phone industry decade ago. ask blackberry, nokia, or palm.
