Difference between Data Science and marketing analytics


i work social media startup in asia. has grown rapidly 5 million subscribers 200k new subscribers every month. has similar model facebook built different user-base. using cms , marketing tools leanplum , other apis/cloud tools typical social media app , user data.

since work machine learning apis , i'm comfortable java, python , c++ i've been considering studying data science , analytics year , transitioning role of data scientist or data engineer.

first steps social media start can perform data analytics? lot of analytics using tableau, r, , python , maybe spark? how data different current data obtained basic third-party cms , cloud tools? company need data engineer before data scientist?

if company not huge linkedin, airbnb or facebook etc there need "data scientist" or data engineer? lot of these positions created series funding.

technical , practical advice can give?
