i writing response in thread , thought might deserve thread of it's own.
there aren't lot of power consumption details on older powerpc hardware, think because architecture demanded lot of energy perform. apple love boast 6w/hour mac mini, didn't see marketing material how power g4s , g5s consumed.
so, here own non-scientific , rounded-out results. have plugged digital watt/voltage/amperage meter @ wall , noted steady idle consumption , variances under load (running geekbench 2.x).
power usage results:
- g4 sawtooth 350mhz radeon 9700 gpu (no display)
- idle: 55w. 95w under load.
- g4 mac mini 1.42ghz (no display)
- idle: 30w. 60w under load.
- g5 dual 1.8 (2003) 970 fx 5200 gpu + adc 17" display
- idle: 170w. 275w under load.
- g5 dual 2.0 (2003) 970 6800 gt gpu (no display)
- idle: 170w. 400w under load.
- g5 dual 2.3 (late ‘05) 970mp quadro fx 4500 gpu (no display)
- idle: 150w. 250w under load.
notes:
- non-ppc comparison: mac pro 8 core 3.2ghz (2008) xeon gtx 680 gpu (no display)
- idle: 220w. 270w under load.
- the g5s tested @ idle consumption cpu speed set reduced in energy saver, set highest performance , run through geekbench load testing.
- note 6800 gt, fx 4500 (and gtx 680) gpus power hungry. stock-standard graphics cards such fx 5200 or ati radeon 9600 consume less power.
- some of these units have more internal devices (expansion cards, hard drives, optical drives, etc) others, rough idea of how different machines consume in real world.
- it's interesting dual 2.0 maxed out higher dual 1.8 when share same period architecture, (logic board , psu) , have interchangeable cpus.
- for reference, mac pro's original gt120 graphics card draw approx 60 watts less while idle gtx 680.
interesting see results 970fx model g5s (including imacs) quad , more g4s, quicksilver, mdds , lampshade imacs.
feel free discuss and/or post results!
i find these kinds of energy posts interesting, although not relevant me. not put them down or anything, have yet have computer in home out consumes air conditioner power in august.
energy bill has gone maybe $30 since having 2 g5s on @ home. biggest issue in summer a/c. summer means difference of $200 in our electric bill august on january or february , that's because of a/c , not computers i've left on.
