apple, twitter, snap, facebook, microsoft, , collection of other technology companies have filed legal brief week, aimed @ fourth amendment , "rigid analog-era" protections lag behind protecting users in modern age (via reuters).
brief filed in regards case carpenter v. united states, supreme court case focusing on warrantless search , seizure of historical smartphone records, , whether or not such data collection government prohibited fourth amendment's protection against unreasonable search , seizures.
carpenter v. united states ties smartphone data held third party -- or company has access , can store personal user data -- , includes information revealing "location , movements" of user on 127 days.
new filing, in support of neither party, companies state customers should not "forced relinquish fourth amendment protections" against intrusion government, because choose use modern technology.
other companies included in brief included airbnb, google, , dropbox. case in question dates 2011, when timothy carpenter convicted on robbery charges after investigators uncovered smartphone data past location information without warrant. supreme court agreed review case in june 2017, , it's on court's term docket october 2017.
